Training Day is a great movie. It's a story told in one day of a man's training as a narcotics agent gone wrong starring Denzel Washington (The Preacher's Wife) and Ethan Hawke (Hamlet). However, it is not a great DVD.
The special features lack to grab the imagination of the viewer .If you play the deleted scenes, you'll see the reel of scenes shown that were rightfully taken out of the movie. If you want to skip some of the boring scenes to get to one in particular, you can't because the reel just keeps going no matter what. You are pretty much stuck watching a bunch of slow moving, boring, deleted scenes.
Then there's an alternate ending which defines the word "under whelming". Do not expect a great change to the story when you play it. The difference between the actual ending and the deleted ending is a small conformation between a supervisor played by Tom Berenger (The Substitute) and Ethan Hawke's character.
However, if an alternate ending is your thing, check out Joy Ride because it comes with a thirty-minute alternate ending. First off, this movie is surprisingly good! It is about two brothers playing a prank during a road trip gone horribly wrong starring Steven Zahn (Riding in Cars with Boys) and Paul Walker (The Fast and The Furious) and the tough and rough trucker Rusty Nail who aims to teach Zahn's character a serious lesson.
The 30-minute alternate ending makes a world of a difference in this movie. It's like seeing a completely different movie. Plus, there are several other mini-alternate endings to choose from that spin the story around. The only down fall about the Joy Ride DVD is that there is only one deleted scene. The scene is a "kissing" scene that is worthless. That scene definitely lacks impact, but the several alternate endings rightfully make up for it. The special features also include several actors such as Eric Roberts (Best of the Best) replacing the voice of Rusty Nails in a chilling scene in the movie.
Zoolander is a hilarious movie with hilarious special features. The story is about Derrick Zoolander played by Ben Stiller (Meet the Parents) who is a world respected male model and "really, really, really, really, good looking" as he likes to say. Derrick finds himself brainwashed to assassinate a world leader in order to help corporate fashion leaders preserve child labor laws. The special features are hilarious TV spot commercials such as "Zoolander on reading" where he advises people to not fear words because, "They can only hurt you if you read them". Are you scared yet? The DVD also contains incredibly funny out takes and deleted scenes.
So in a nutshell, if you like special features go for Joy Ride and Zoolander, but make sure to get Training Day on video only (It's cheaper this way).
