"My goal is to make sure that what you're doing is connected to what (the students are) doing," he said. "You can't presume what you taught they've learned. That's where the skill of teaching and professionalism begins."
His duties include administering CCSN's instructional and academic support programs. He will also direct the work of instructional deans, department chairs and faculty.
Palinchak, who authored, "The Evolution of the Community College" explained that community college students rarely finish in two years anymore.
"It is not a two-year college," he said. "It's not grade 13 and 14, it's a community college."
Palinchak has been involved with teaching and administration for 40 years. Last year, he served as vice president of academic affairs for the Nashville State Technical Institute in Tennessee. He held similar positions at Southwest Tennessee Community College and State Technical Institute at Memphis. Palinchak was also president of Lake-Sumter Community College in Florida for seven years. He has a doctorate in higher education from Syracuse University and teaching degree and faculty experience in physics, mathematics and engineering technology.
"Students are like consumers, they're paying for a product," Palinchak said.
Patty Charlton, vice president of finance and administration, is ready to roll up her sleeves and face the challenges of the state budget $3.4 million cutbacks.
Last year, while serving as the interim vice president of finance and administration, Charlton valiantly investigated the State Legislative clerical error costing CCSN over $6 million.
Charlton and Government Liaison John Cummings appealed the incident over the summer. The State Legislature refunded CCSN with $2.57 million, and the monies will be directed toward funding new faculty, support services, libraries and security.
"Things are going in a new direction now, and with the new president things are only going to get better," Charlton, the former CCSN director of budget services said. "We're hoping to have a really open and inclusive shared governance."
Charlton will manage and develop the annual and biennial budgets, conduct fiscal analysis and planning. She will also oversee administrative support services such as human resources, the bookstore, maintenance and safety and security.
